Waste Heat Recovery from Steel Slag

Waste heat recovery from steel slag is a technology that captures and reuses the thermal energy contained within molten steel slag—produced during the steelmaking process at temperatures ranging from 1,400°C to 1,700°C.

Each ton of steel slag can recover approximately 1.2 GJ of sensible heat, equivalent to the energy released by the complete combustion of 40 kg of standard coal.

This technology not only significantly reduces energy consumption in steel enterprises but also enables the resource utilization of residual slag, marking a critical pathway for industrial energy conservation.

Primary Applications

Recovered high-temperature heat can be converted into various forms of energy based on the specific demands of the plant:

l Steam Generation and Power Generation: High-temperature flue gas passes through a waste heat boiler to produce superheated steam, which can drive a steam turbine for power generation or be supplied directly to production processes.

l District Heating: Low-grade waste heat is extracted via heat exchange systems to provide a clean heating source for surrounding residential areas during winter.

l Combustion Air Preheating: Recovered heat is used to preheat combustion air required for steelmaking or to dry damp alloy additives, directly reducing process energy consumption.
